But something smelled off about this. Gratitude and relief were spilling out of me in an emotional hemorrhage, but this didn’t feel very… Erebus. He was a Child of Chaos. He didn’t have to lift a finger to help me if he didn’t want to.

“Did your daddy-o put you up to this?” That didn’t seem right. Chaos had pulled him away from South Georgia Island. The father of magic hadn’t let him stay put to fulfill some part of our deal that I’d never heard of before.

“Or is this about Kaya?” Ryann cleverly inquired.

Ah… bingo. One look at the swirling smoke, and I knew she was right. The wisps began to trickle out of his temporary edges, like he couldn’t control them.

“I’ll be damned if I will allow Davin to steal Kaya’s mind and make her his unwilling slave. And I will not permit him to disrupt the natural order of the planet.” Erebus bristled. So, maybe he had changed a little. “Nor can Davin be allowed to have the Bestiary’s power. That is sacred, forged from the spiritual energy of my father’s gifts. We all benefit from my presence here, instead of… where I have been.”

Ryann peered at him. “Which is where, exactly?”

“That is none of your concern,” he replied sternly.

“No, where have you been?” I insisted. I wanted to know what had kept him.

He groaned, his red eyes flaring. “In an otherworld that once belonged to a Child of Chaos who has since returned to the Chaos stream.”

“They got kicked out?” I knew that Chaos had threatened to do just that to Lux and Erebus, but I hadn’t really expected their father to go through with something like that.

He shook his head slowly. “No, Moros chose to return to the Chaos stream from whence we came. He no longer wished to be a Child, for several centuries of enduring his particular duties left him… unwilling to continue.”

“Moros?” Ryann had gone into education mode. “I don’t know that name.”

“The Child of Doom.” Erebus turned his wispy face away. I wondered how the Children felt when they had to say goodbye to one of their own. I supposed it would be like any other death—painful and wrenching, with only memories left. And they’d have to wait a lot longer before they were reunited.

Ryann nodded, offering him a sympathetic look.

I laughed awkwardly. “Are you sure he’s not still around? With everything Katherine and Davin have gotten up to, it seems like there’s a lot of doom and gloom going around.”

Ryann shot me a look just as Erebus’s wispy head whipped back. “It is no matter for jesting, Finch.”

“Sorry.” I’d never been one for appropriate timing. “You said you were in his otherworld?”

“I was, though it is falling to pieces.” Erebus’s churning smoke steadied in its whirling. “Since it belonged to Moros, I had no ability to manipulate its design, and it would not listen to my commands. As such, I have been bored enough to listen for you. You should be grateful that I ended up there.
