“It was all true. I can’t… I can’t believe it was all true.” Adam’s voice drew my attention away from the shining Child. He stared up at me as if I were a stranger. “You told me everything, and I… didn’t listen. You wanted me to understand, and I didn’t. It wasn’t a joke. How can it not be a joke?”

I steeled myself. This was what I’d wanted, wasn’t it? The truth, out in the open. No more lies, or hiding, in an attempt to salvage our relationship. But, judging by the way he looked at me, we may well have been past the point of no return.

“I wanted to see how you’d react,” I admitted.

“How I’d react?” His eyes widened, his words stilted. “How did you think I’d react?!”

“I… I don’t know.”

He used the terrace furniture to lift himself. His body shook. “What are you, Ryann? Are you one of them? Have you done something to me, to get me to… I don’t know, not see things, or… You mentioned wiping my mind. Have you done that to me, when I got too close to the truth?”

“What? No!” I gasped. Terror had warped Adam’s mind, making him see me in a different light. I saw doubt in his eyes. A horrible, horrible doubt that I wasn’t who he thought I was.

“Then why didn’t you tell me everything was real? Why did you wrap it up in hypotheticals and make a joke out of it? Because, I’m telling you right now, none of that was funny for me.” He gulped loudly, running a hand through his hair. “How do I know you’re not just hiding what you are? You’ve been hiding so much from me. Working with Finch, this magic stuff, and who knows what else.”

I shook my head vehemently and walked toward him. He stepped back immediately. “I’m not a magical, Adam. But… I do have a magical family.”

Lux stood by, watching with interest. No doubt this was entertaining for her, watching the inner workings of troubled human relationships. I’d worried she’d be annoyed at the delay, but she seemed to be enjoying herself enough to wait.

“The Smiths are magical?” Adam leaned against the balcony for support.

“No, not them. Harley is a magical, and so is Finch.” I knew I’d get in trouble for telling him, but after what he’d endured, he deserved to know the truth. “I only found out about the magical world a year ago, when that man, Davin, kidnapped me and my parents. He wanted to trap us, luring Harley to rescue us. It worked, but he has a way of surviving pretty much everything. He deals in Necromancy—resurrection and that kind of thing.”

Adam paled. “I feel sick.”

“Put your head between your legs and take deep breaths,” Lux interjected. “I find that works for most humans.”

“I’m guessing you’re a magic person, too?” Adam could barely lift his head. To be honest, I was surprised he hadn’t passed out altogether after the abuse Davin had just put him through.
