CHAPTER ELEVEN

Something in the back of Colt’s mind screamed danger. He’d made a sweep of the back parking lot and checked an empty car parked on the street close to the Mission, but nothing seemed out of place. Still, he couldn’t shake the innate feeling that the whole thing was about to blow up on him.

He ought to make a full circuit of the building, but the alarm bells screaming in his head said leaving the unlocked kitchen door unguarded was asking for trouble. Leaving Danielle unprotected inside for more than a moment felt like the height of foolishness as it was.

Stopping with his hand on the handle of the kitchen door, he let his eyes sweep the brick of the building. Maybe nothing was wrong out here. Maybe there wasn’t any additional danger lurking in the shadows.

Maybe he was simply all stirred up because everything between him and Danielle had skidded sideways with that moment that passed between them last night. She’d been standoffish with him all day, the warm ease between them chilling into ice. If anything was wrong in the world, that was it.

Maybe he really should tell Vance he needed to be off this detail.

Resolving to do just that before either he or Danielle was hurt, Colt lifted his head to go into the kitchen.

Motion in the reflection of the glass caught his eye, and he kept a practiced stillness. Behind him, the shadow of a man stepped closer, nearing the bottom of the stairs.

Pulling in a deep breath, Colt drew his pistol at the same time he whipped around on the small stoop, keeping the weapon leveled on the man who stood just two steps beneath him.

Eyes widening in quick surprise, the guy took one step back, just out of Colt’s reach. He was tall and heavyset, his arms covered in the same types of tattoos he’d seen on the young men who’d left with Justin, but this guy was older, harder. His demeanor was less cocky, more violently confident. In his hand, he gripped a thick knife.

Heart pounding harder, Colt stared at the man without wavering. His gut had been right. Something was about to go down. “Drop it. Now.”

Dark eyes narrowed, the black gaze of his would-be attacker never leaving his.

Colt had been in enough standoffs to know the guy was weighing his options, and he was just as likely to lunge as he was to run. Letting his finger slip to the trigger, Colt steeled himself for whatever came.

The motion must have been obvious. After two rapid blinks, the man launched off the steps in a dead run for the street.

On a burst of adrenaline, Colt followed to the corner, his boots pounding on the pavement, but he skidded to a halt at the street. He couldn’t leave Danielle. Had to get back inside to her right now. This could be the beginning of a much bigger strike. Ripping his cell phone from his pocket, Colt pressed the emergency number for dispatch as he ran back across the parking lot.
