Self-awareness

To make good choices for yourself in life you need to know yourself fully, and understand what it is you want – not perhaps the thing or the person itself, but what they represent. Above all you need to take responsibility for your actions (your porn addiction, your anger, your passivity) and understand why, for example, you choose to stay stuck or repeat your behaviour like Ed and his affairs.

Fear of loneliness runs deep in our psyche. After all, we’re group creatures. We see loneliness as stigmatizing, and try to avoid it at all costs (see Chapter 9, ‘Social Media’). And sometimes this propels us into inappropriate relationships, relationships that are unhealthy, relationships in which we wither rather than flourish. We can leave, and yet we’re terrified of leaving. This is all part of the journey of self-knowledge.

And there is one other thing to bear in mind: life is all about endings. In nature there is decay and dying all around, but there is re-growth too. Or as Leonard Cohen once wrote: there is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.
