In 1866 Queen Victoria, a talented and enthusiastic water-colourist herself, commanded the firm of Winsor and Newton, holders of the Royal Warrant, to produce brushes for her personal use. They were to be of the highest possible quality, and in the Queen’s favourite size, No. 7. The hair was to be from the finest Kolinsky sable, the ferrules of sterling silver, and the handles of ivory. The Series 7 Kolinsky Sable range of brushes is still available from Winsor and Newton today, though they are extremely costly, even without the original silver and ivory handles. They are, of course, entirely handmade, and now range in size from 000 to 10.
