“No way.” Calum laughed later that afternoon over lunch at the Graff Hotel’s smaller pub-style restaurant as Walker pulled up images of tombstones from arts and craft sites. “You really are going to make a cemetery.”
“No, kids and their families are, but instead of gruesome we’re going for classy and family friendly cute.”
“Explain.” He stole half her bacon, lettuce, tomato chutney, and squash sandwich and took a bite.
She held out her hand and he returned her sandwich.
“You’re eating too slowly.”
“It’s good for the digestion.”
“Bad move if you’re with me, because I love to eat, and you are tempting me way too much with your nibble every few minutes.”
He’d already finished his salad, avocado toasted baguette, and some rosemary string fries with truffle oil.
“For a small town, you have some serious chef action here. I could get used to this.”
Walker barely held back a snort. “I spend most of my time trying not to eat,” Walker said. From this angle she could eye Shane at the small horseshoe shaped bar across the lobby pouring two glasses of white wine for two casually dressed women who looked like they might be stay-at-home moms, catching up on a little gossip before school bus drop off back home.
“So tell me about your tombstone idea,” he said grabbing a few more of the shoestring fries.
Walker turned the computer screen towards him so he could see better. “First, I didn’t like the idea because it was negative for families but then I thought I could use it as a celebration of local families and a chance to share something with the town. I’d need to modify the tombstone idea so it’s cheaper but still clever and cute. Then I thought instead of an epitaph, families or kids could write a haiku about themselves—celebrating their life or their family when they come to the jack-o-lantern carving family fun afternoon.”
“I like. So nothing to do with death?”
She shook her head and picked up her sandwich only now he was eyeing her, not her food. She took a bite.
“Nope. Life. And poetry,” she said thoughtfully as she chewed. “Haiku or I think it’s called a tanka, which has two more lines of seven syllables each.
“I love it.”
“Really?” Maybe she was getting the hang of event planning and public relations.
“You need to get better at accepting compliments, Walker Kent.”
She winced. She was tired of using her mother’s maiden name. It wasn’t like she was close to her mother anymore. And she hated the deception because so much of her life had been built on deception. She had thought she would speak truth to power when she went into politics. Instead, she’d lost truth. She’d told Calum so much already. What was one thing more?
“I never got the chance to tell you the second thing I came to talk to you about this morning.”
She laughed. “That’s some serious ADD you got going if you’re only thinking of it now.”
“True,” he said easily.
And just like that, Walker had to remind herself to breathe.
