Chapter 15

Football season was well underway by now. The team had played a total of five games: two at home and three away. They had had a 4-1 record so far, having lost one of their away games. That one loss upset Devontae terribly although he played great. The score was very close the entire game with a final score of 21-20. He felt like he could’ve played better and began to push himself even harder. Fortunately the upcoming weekend was an open week, so they didn’t have a game. With Devontae constantly practicing and Shai always busy with the dance team and classes, they hadn’t seen much of each other in the previous weeks. Devontae had spent the night after the last home game in keeping their post-game ritual. Other than that, they only saw each other once a week maybe. They even talked on the phone less, so they needed to use the free weekend to spend time together. Shai had the perfect plan, but how to get Devontae to go along with it would be a challenge.

The Tuesday night of that week Devontae decided to come over, and it would be the perfect time for Shai to tell him the idea that he had for the weekend. He thought it would be a great idea for them to go away for the weekend. They would leave Friday evening and return Sunday. They’d go somewhere no one knew who they were, possibly to the lake again and rent a room. It would be a way for the both of them to away from their busy lives. Shai knew that he would more than likely get some apprehension, but hopefully he could easily persuade him. Devontae made it over around seven, straight from football practice as usual. He walked in and flopped right down on the couch.

“How was practiced today?” Shai asked him.

“It was alright I guess. You’d think they wouldn’t push us so hard since we don’t have a game this week.” Devontae replied.

“That’s why they are. Since you don’t have to play this weekend, you have more energy to utilize. Plus they don’t want the team to become complacent.”

“For whatever reason, I just know that I’m tired as hell. What you got going this week?”

“We’re getting ready for homecoming next weekend. I’m working on a new routine for pregame, plus basketball season is starting soon, so for those few weeks that football and basketball overlap it’s going to be crazy.”

“Damn bae, seems like you have a lot on your plate.”

“Yeah I do, that’s why I’ve been thinking.”

“What’s on your mind?”

“I think we should go away this weekend.”

“Shai I thought we already went through this.”

“Tae I know how you feel, but I think it’ll be good for us. We can go somewhere nobody really knows us and stay a couple of days. We already don’t see much of each other.”

“I don’t know bae. Where are you thinking about going?”

“We can go to the lake. There’s a hotel right up the road from it.
