Chapter Ten

Hailey knew she shouldn’t have gotten her hopes up about the possibility of finding this guy. It was frustrating to have seen and caught him in action, only to have him slip away.

She looked again at the sketch Amber had completed. It wasn’t as good as a photograph, but was it possible that the likeness would lead to an arrest?

“Don’t worry, Hailey,” Rock assured her. “We still have a good chance at finding this guy. The officers at the bus depot found a navy blue baseball hat about twenty yards from the doorway. They’re checking to see if they can get DNA from any hair follicles or sweat from it.”

“DNA would be great, but we need a suspect to match it, right?” Again, she wasn’t about to get her hopes up. She could head back to the transit station to see if she could grab a taxi, but if not, she’d feel like a sitting duck. She could give in and ask Rock to take her, but she felt certain he’d continue to badger her about staying.

“Hailey?” Rock’s intense gaze was impossible to ignore. “Give the police some time, okay? They have the sketch and could get this guy in custody very soon.”

“I don’t know what to do,” she reluctantly admitted. “I know it’s possible they’ll find this guy, but I need to find a new job, ASAP.” And a place to live, she added silently.

“Please let me help you,” Rock said softly. “I know how much you enjoy your job at the hobby farm. If you’d just trust me for a little while longer, I’m sure we can get this guy.”

“I trust you more than most,” she said with a weary smile.

“I’m glad.” His grin was dazzling. “Please, Hailey. Don’t leave without giving us a chance.” He seemed to realize what he’d said and hastily amended it to, “Without giving the police a chance to find this guy. I can protect you if you’ll let me.”

She knew Rock was capable of protecting her, but the real problem was that she liked him more than she should. That she longed to be held in his arms again.

Ridiculous longing, as Rock believed in God and she only believed in the devil.

A devil who’d pretended to be a preacher.

“Twenty-four hours,” Rock pressed. “One more day. I promise to drive you to Knoxville myself, if you’re still determined to go.”

Suddenly she couldn’t fight Rock and her own desire to stay in Gatlinburg any longer. “One day,” she agreed.

“Great.” Rock’s relief was evident on his features. “Thanks, Hailey.”

She nodded and edged toward the door. “Is it okay if we leave the police station now?”

“Of course.” He stopped at the desk long enough to retrieve his weapon, then crossed the room, held the door open, and followed her outside.

The fresh air was wonderful, despite the heat of the sun. She closed her eyes and lifted her face to the warmth, doing her best to let go of the past.

Being inside the police station had
