Chapter 10
Wiglaf had been at Camp Dragononka for three days. He was getting used to the dark, cloudy sky. The awful smell. The coughing. The daily hikes. Even the meals-on-a-stick. But he could not get used to the strange howling and flapping sounds he heard in the dark. He hadn’t had a good night’s sleep since he’d been at camp.
“What makes that flapping noise every night, Mordie?” Wiglaf asked one morning as he and the other campers were roasting their breakfasts-on-a-stick.
“It’s just the wind,” said Mordie. “One more thing that makes this camp so...”
“Special,” Wiglaf muttered to himself. Weird was more like it.
After breakfast, he and several other campers sat down on the picnic cloth that LoLo called the Arts and Crafts area. They watched as LoLo took a shiny black stone and tied two thin leather strips around it.
“See?” She held up the stone bound by the strips. “Now I’ll tie a few knots in the leather...” She did so. “And now I’ll tie in another stone.” Before long, LoLo had a bracelet.
“Cool!” said Janice, sounding more like her usual self. “I’m going to make my mom a bracelet just like that.”
“Me too,” said Erica. She dumped all the black stones she had collected onto the cloth. “Although I don’t know why she would wear a common rock bracelet when she has so many jewels.”
Wiglaf took the blue stone from his pocket. He liked the way it shone. He hoped Molwena would like it. She had no jewelry, so she would not object to wearing a rock bracelet. He took two leather strips and began tying them in knots.
“Look what I made!” cried Dudwin. “A fang necklace!” He held up a leather strip that he’d threaded through the cavities in the fangs. Grinning, he put the necklace around his neck. “How do I look, Wiggie?”
“It suits you, Dud,” Wiglaf said. He was glad that his little brother was busy. And not trying to scare everybody.
“What are you making, Wiggie?” asked Dudwin.
“A bracelet for our mother,” said Wiglaf. “It can be from both of us.”
“Nah,” said Dudwin. “I’ll make her something later.”
After Arts and Crafts, Wiglaf went searching for Daisy. He found her and Tusker sitting on the shore of Lake Leechalot.
“Ello-hay, Iggie-way,” said Daisy.
“I have been missing you, Daisy,” Wiglaf said. “Are you having fun?”
“Es-yay.” Daisy smiled. She told him that she liked lolling in the mud with Tusker. “E-hay is-yay o-say ood-gay ooking-lay.” She sighed. “If-yay only-yay e-hay ould-cay alk-tay!”
“Perhaps I should summon Zelnoc,” said Wiglaf. “He could put a speech spell on Tusker.”
Daisy’s eyes grew wide. “Es-yay! O-day at-thay! ”
But the lunch gong rang, so Wiglaf had to hurry to the campfire. He sat down with the other campers, picking at their lunches-on-a-stick.
“What is this stuff?” asked Zelda.
“Best you don’t know, lass,” said Cookie. “Trust me on this.”
Mordie strode over to the campfire. “Today is a special day, campers,” he said. “It’s the day you find out what Dragon team you’re on.” He pointed to Torblad. “Count off by twos!”
“Two!” shouted Torblad.
