The purpose of this exercise is to get you into a groove or rhythm of playing. It’s one thing to learn to play the notes and another thing entirely to make it into music.

PICKING

What must be addressed is picking/strumming. Picking patterns are an essential part of playing the guitar and make riffs/chords sound either amazing or terrible. When starting out on guitar, most players pick downwards on every stroke. This works for some riffs but upstrokes are just as important. When writing out picking patterns, guitarists use D (down pick) and U (up pick) to signify what sort of picking is used. Try picking in alternate picking patterns like these:
