FOURTEEN

COHEN

Ma Bev flattened her lips at me. She brushed her palms on her broad abdomen on the white apron. She shook her head, turned to the stove, and stirred the pot of steaming stew. I swear it was unhealthy, the way I wanted the woman’s opinion. She knew it, took advantage of it, and hit me over the head with it. Right now, her dirty looks reduced me to about four years old.

She reminded me of my mother sometimes. They even sounded and looked alike. It was the first thing I thought when we came to her house. Unfortunately, and apparently, I had been causing more trouble than usual, sighing and slamming her cabinets. I was made to take a seat on the stool by the kitchen counter.

My employees and business associates would lose their respect for me if they saw me with Ma Bev. Another reason why I enjoyed my strictly private life and the privilege of the NDA she grumpily signed.

“It’s still okay, it’s not too late.” She replaced the spatula on the counter and glared at me. “On Monday, fire her, Cohen. That woman is very manipulative.”

I had expected something along those lines. She shared unwavering loyalty with my mother.

But she had Alexis wrong.

“Far from that. That’s not why it happened.”

She had her back to me again, “Yes, she is. A woman who rejected you and called you a creep, stuck her tongue down your throat close to the end of her probation period,” she fisted her hands on her waist. “Hmm, what could she possibly want?”

“Maybe she has changed her mind about me,” I replied stubbornly.

“Cohen, you’ve been treating her like crap for the past few weeks. Any normal person should leave, or have some shame, and apologize. Resolve the issues. No, she thinks it’s easier to get in your pants. I’m telling you, she’s trouble.”

I hid a smile in my coffee mug. “Yeah, she is.”

Ma Bev rolled her eyes, “Did you hear anything I just said?”

“Sure did.”

“And did it pierce that thick skull of yours?”

I grinned at her, “No, ma’am.”

I was trying hard to focus though. It was difficult when the recurring image in my mind was Alexis across my thighs. I could still remember the feel of her fingers in my hair. The sound of her moans. The taste of her mouth. The feel of her hair.

Ma Bev snapped her fingers in my face. “Are you still with me?”

I blinked at her. I could not leave the counter for another five minutes at least. My joggers had a little mountain in front.

“You have it bad for this girl,” she tsked, shaking her head. “Will you ever talk to her about the message?”

My joggers deflated fast.

“I don’t think it’s the right time.”

“When is the right time? You can’t just pretend she didn’t say those things to you. You didn’t deserve it.”

“A lot of time has passed. And we were kids.”

“People talk about kids like they are foolish. She made a choice, being a kid has nothing to do with it.
