ECHINACEA

(Echinacea purpurea)

■ Zones: 3 to 9

A staple in herbal medicine, echinacea is revered for its ability to fight infections, including colds and the flu. This perennial contains vitamins A, B, and E as well as minerals, including calcium and iron. All parts of the plant—leaves, flowers, and roots—are used in both herbal medicine and tea.

Echinacea is actually a genus, but it is used as a common noun to refer to several different species, which are also referred to as coneflowers. E. purpurea, native to the eastern United States, is called purple coneflower. Yellow coneflower (E. paradoxa) is native to Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas and produces yellow flowers. Tennessee coneflower (E. tennesseensis) is, as its name suggests, native to Tennessee, and it also produces purple blooms.
