Lettuce – Almost any variety of lettuce will grow well in a container garden because the roots are shallower than most other plants. It is one of the veggies that are easy to grow in containers, and it will even grow well in a small pot. Lettuce will continue to produce new leaves, so it will continuously provide you with fresh greens for your salads and wraps.

Since the roots do not grow deep, you can easily grow lettuce in any wide, shallow container with a drainage hole and hold some soil. It will need to be at least six inches deep. What makes lettuce so great to grow in the winter is that the seeds will not germinate in temperatures above eighty degrees, but they will germinate when the weather is as low as forty degrees. Place the seeds directly into the soil in the container, about a half-inch below the top of the earth. As the seeds begin to germinate, pick out the smaller and less healthy ones to allow the larger seedlings room to grow. The ideal space between seedlings is four to six inches to allow the leaves room to grow and spread. Head lettuce will need more space than most variety of leaf lettuce. It will require a container that is eight inches deep.

Give lettuce plenty of full sunlight so that it gets at least six hours of light every day. If one day becomes incredibly warm, move the lettuce plants only to have partial sun so the soil will not dry out too quickly. Lettuce will need to be watered frequently so that the earth will remain moist, but not wet, all of the time. When the lettuce plants' leaves are four to six inches tall, they are ready to harvest. Most people will only pick the outer leaves since the lettuce will grow new leaves from the center. Do not cut into or below the lettuce's crown, which is the head centerpiece, or the entire plant will die.
