I’m not trying to get you to intentionally stress, starve, or restrict your plant’s growth in any way. But don’t fall for the myth that bigger plants are better. The point is: Size is going to vary based on conditions and your approach as a gardener. A safe bet is to leave each plant five to six feet (1.5 to 1.8 m) in diameter and expect them to reach up to eight feet (2.5 m) tall. This gives you ample breathing room around each plant—a good idea for encouraging air circulation and minimizing problems pertaining to mold and mildew. When in doubt, give a little more room. By the way, this is a good rule of thumb when it comes to planting just about anything in your garden. (Except succulents—jam those together.) Again, don’t feel bad if your cannabis doesn’t reach eight feet tall. Some of my finest pot has come from the smallest plants.

You need to find a large enough planting space to give your weed some breathing room.
