Getting Moisture Levels Right

Humidity — the measure of water vapor in the air — is another important factor in plant growth, and it can be pretty tough to control in a greenhouse, polytunnel, or dome. Too much humidity encourages diseases like botrytis and powdery mildew, and too little slows the growth of plants. The humidity level is dependent on air temperature, as warmer air has a higher capacity for holding moisture than cooler air. When the structure heats up, moisture enters the air as it evaporates from the soil and transpires from plants’ leaves. Come evening and night, the temperature goes down and the air releases the excess moisture, which forms a layer on leaf surfaces, glazing materials, and other surfaces in the structure.

When plants are grown under plastic covers like polyethylene and polycarbonate, they don’t have access to rain water and soil can dry out quickly, especially on a warm, sunny day. Paying attention to moisture is essential; you need to learn how much water your crops need, how often they need to be irrigated, and when the best time is to water.
