The time of year that you choose to dig goldenseal will affect the ratio of fresh weight to dry weight. For example, in my area, if you dig goldenseal in the spring, from April through early June, it may take five to seven pounds of green root to make one pound of dried root. In the fall, from October through December, it may only take 2½ to 2¾ pounds of green root to make one pound of dried root.

Making Yield Estimates

For your records, do not forget to get a good estimate of your yields per unit of land area. This can easily be accomplished by measuring off an area of bed, harvesting the roots from that area, and weighing them. Be sure to keep them separate during the drying process so you have an estimate of your fresh weight–dry weight ratio.

If you know exactly how much actual bed space your total harvest will include, then you can easily estimate your final yield. As an example, if you harvested 4 pounds of roots from 20 square feet of bed space, and the total bed space to be harvested is 100 square feet, then multiply the pounds of root from the measured area by the total amount of bed space you are going to harvest. Then divide by the square feet of the measured test area. So, for my example, 4 × 100 = 400; 400 ÷ 20 = 20. I would expect to harvest 20 pounds of fresh root from the 100 square feet of actual bed space.
