Although there is solid, promising research on the ability of biochar to suppress diseases, both soilborne and airborne, the mechanism by which biochar disrupts pathogens isn’t clear. Most of the current theories attribute this effect to its improving the population of beneficial microbes, absorbing substances that damage roots, and/or generally improving the health of plants by enriching their environment. So biochar remains somewhat mysterious, but what is clear is that it benefits soil. It can be purchased at some farm supply stores or online, or you can make it at home in a couple of ways.
