If you forget to pluck after a rainy week in August, you could end up with too many tall shoots like these.
Finally, pruning more mature plants also serves to protect or rejuvenate their health. Dead or diseased branches are a potential source of pathogens, and regular removal is a necessary aspect of preventive healthcare for tea plants. The most extreme form of pruning is rejuvenation pruning, which is meant to rejuvenate an older plant by cutting the stems as far down as several inches off the soil. Few to no leaves are left and the plant comes back from the base. In theory, early winter, when root starch is high, is the best time for any major rejuvenation pruning. As with younger plants, less-drastic trimming can be done in mid- to late winter or during midsummer to encourage later-season growth.
