For sandy soils with a gentle slope, a porous canvas hose may be useful, but with this method only one or two rows can be irrigated at one setting of the hose.
One of the most valuable uses of irrigation is to prevent blossom damage during cold spells in the spring. A spray that is applied continuously will protect blossoms when temperatures drop as low as 25°F. This spray must be started before the temperatures dip below freezing, and must be continued until the temperature has risen above 32°F and all ice has melted. The amount of water used need not be large, and can be kept to a minimum by using small nozzles.
