Using Peppers Ornamentally

Peppers blossom and fruit simultaneously — and usually with abundance. The white flowers and colorful fruit are just as welcome in the flower garden as they are in the vegetable garden. Look to the sunny “holes” in your landscape that can be strategically filled with lush pepper plants.

Peppers are bushy, dark-green plants with upright growth. They can be used much like shrubs. The fruits come in all sizes, shapes, and colors, and are often borne above the foliage for an attractive display — even the green fruits are showy. Many varieties with compact growth and colorful fruit (Corona, Gypsy, Purple Beauty) work well in a flower border. I particularly like the varieties with plants that grow no larger than 18 inches, like Sweet Pickle, Thai Hot, Chile Pequin, and Super Chili. They require little space and produce hundreds of small, cheery peppers that add a novel accent to any ornamental border. Try combining them with dwarf zinnias, marigolds, portulaca, red verbena, or lobelia for a splash of vibrant color. And while you’re enjoying the display, don’t forget to harvest a few of the peppers to enjoy in the kitchen.
