During the summer months, bay can often die back through lack of water. The soil in containers and pots dries out quickly and care should be taken to water bay trees regularly. Water very occasionally in the winter, and only when the soil feels dry.

Bay can also be grown from seed although germination rates can be poor. Lay seed on moist compost in a well-drained container and cover with a fine layer of dry compost. Keep in a warm dark place until seedlings appear. Look after seedlings until the plants become large enough to handle and then transplant to their final position in the garden or into their own containers.
