OCTOBER

Getting Ready for Bed

The scent and crunch of fallen leaves under foot, and no bugs, make midautumn a wonderful time to be out in the garden. We can take pleasure in the crisp, breezy days and low, glowing light. October is a great time to tackle all those chores you put off, such as testing your soil and turning the compost pile. If you’ve been thinking about putting up a hoop house, get moving. Get the garden ready for bed. Toss the old plants and debris into the compost and harvest the perishables. Keep your camera or notebook handy and make some end-of-season notes about what you want to do first thing next spring. The main event is over, but there’s still a lot to do.
