Water

Because pumpkin vines have hollow stems and large leaves, they’re sensitive to drying out, especially while they’re flowering and fruiting. Don’t ever let the soil get completely dry. Initially, apply water all around each vine, extending well beyond the main root. After the vines become established, avoid root rot by applying water all around but not on or near the main root. Unless rainfall is at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) a week, thoroughly water the soil once a week to a depth of no less than 4 inches (10 cm).

Water early in the day to minimize the spread of bacteria and fungi. Apply water only to the soil, never to the leaves or vines. If you must use overhead sprinklers, early-morning watering is especially important, to give leaves time to dry out before evening.

If vines are allowed to wilt due to lack of water, they’ll produce smaller fruits. Too little, or too much, water can cause fruits to turn soft and fall off the vine. If your problem is excessively moist soil, keep your growing pumpkins from rotting by placing them on boards.
