JEREMY

We rode the moving walkway through the kinetic neon light sculpture, each section changing color and reflecting off Julia’s ebony hair. A curse of being in the art world. Why couldn’t I be like my frat brothers and just say a girl was hot?

“What?” She caught me staring.

“This.” I leaned forward, bringing our faces close. The flush of her skin radiated to mine. We didn’t need the glimmering lights to entrance us.

She pressed into me and flattened her breasts against my chest. The thick fabric of the sweatshirts was maddening. My hand crept to her hip, and I touched the creamy skin of her waist. She straddled my leg. I could feel her heat, and we were flying.

Literally, flying off the end of the moving walkway. I landed first with Julia on top.

“Ouch.” She yelped.

“Why do all of our kisses knock me over?” I winced, testing my limbs to make sure they were in use.

After enduring the glares of other travelers, we stood and gathered our belongings, which had spilled from the shopping bags.

We strolled holding hands along the concourse. Julia rested her head against my arm, and I didn’t care that it was the spot where a bruise was forming from our fall.

Any restaurant we passed was either packed with other marooned travelers or closed up tight.

“We’ll starve except for a pack of soggy breath mints.” Julia offered me the package.

“That’s kind of you, but let’s see what we can do.”

The Executive Club was off to the side. The dark door did not mean it was closed. The door was kept dark and unobtrusive for a reason. To keep people who looked like us out.

I steered her toward it.

“Whoa. Whoa.” She put on the brakes and planted herself as I tugged her arm. “I cannot get kicked out of the airport. There aren’t enough tacky sweatshirts to keep me warm out there.”

“We won’t get kicked out.” I tugged her a bit more.

Her face almost pinched together again. But the neck rub must have still had some effect.

We opened the door, and immediately the hum and harsh lighting of the main hall disappeared.

We approached the host’s podium.

“Sir, Madam. May I help you?” A dude who had to be Valerie’s older brother positioned himself between us and the entrance beyond his podium.

“Yes, we would like a table and something to drink and eat.”

Julia tugged back on my hand, trying to make for the door which had swooshed closed.

His eyes turned sad and his smile wider. “I’m sorry, Sir, you need a membership to enter.”

“Of course. I’m Jeremy Phillips.”

“Do you have your membership card?” His voice rose along with his nostril in a sneer.

There was no way I would show him my license with my date of birth instead of my dad’s. “Packed away with my license in my luggage. I don’t drive while I’m in town. My chauffer battles the city traffic. I’m sure you can look me up.”

Julia shifted her feet in her huge slippers. “Come on,” she whispered.

Reluctantly, he crossed to his computer.
