Discussion Questions
1.What is going well, and what is not, in your gifted education program?
2.How does your school approach talent development, if at all? Are there steps you can take to develop academic talent in all of your students?
3.How can you improve the feedback you give to your students in order to challenge and hold them accountable?
Okay, I need to be honest with you. Prior to writing this book, I was pretty tired of hearing about mindset. Buzzword overload. You know what was rubbing me the wrong way? It was hearing people describe the growth mindset like a slogan: You can do anything if you put your mind to it. That’s great, and I can appreciate it as an optimist, but (as a realist) it’s just not true. There are limits to what we can become and accomplish, and I found it annoying that people were twisting the theory into something it isn’t. So, I’m here to help you understand what mindset theory really is, as well as goal orientation and how that can affect motivation. Even more, I’ll offer ideas for how we can build capacity in our students to pursue mastery, and ultimately grit.
By this point in your life, you presumably understand that struggles and failure are natural experiences when striving for excellence. Someone who is gritty will likely persevere through these struggles. We know that in addition to the passion that leads one to pursue a goal, motivation is also important. What else is there, besides grit, that is the difference between the person who gives up and the person who persists? Perhaps, it’s one’s mindset.
