Chapter Fourteen
A big, airy room with picture windows overlooked manicured lawns and a kidney-shaped swimming pool. A big desk dominated the room, well-stocked bookshelves lined the walls and deep leather chairs and a sofa invited visitors to take it easy in expensive comfort. In one of these chairs a man in a dressing gown sat, a cup of coffee at his elbow. He was a slim man of middle age with a high forehead and a neatly trimmed beard. When he spoke he did so with a cultured English accent. He appeared totally relaxed.
But when the telephone rang he snatched it from its cradle.
âYes?â
âWeâve lost them,â said a voice on the other end.
âLost them!â He sat up abruptly. The heavy brows lowered. âHow did that happen? Where are you?â
âAt the Halsary Inn. We saw them board the bus, as we told you, and followed it. It was flagged down here but no one got off, and they werenât on board. We made sure of that.â
âBut they were to start? Youâre sure of that? So what are you saying? Where are they?â
âThereâs only one explanation. They must have seen us following. We were held up by a tractor and lost sight of the bus for a few minutes. When we got past the tractor we caught up with the bus sooner than we expected to. They must have got off in those few minutes.â
The man in the robe swore softly. âTheyâre kids, for Godâs sake. Children. And youâre letting themâ¦Never mind. How far back was that?â
âOh, several miles.â
âSo theyâre a long way from the MacKay houseâmy guess is theyâll head for that. And theyâll be held up by the little girl. They canât have gone far. Get back there and find them.â
âYes sir. And sir? Itâs unlikely, but in the meantime they might find a telephone and call the police.â
âNever mind the police.â He relaxed again and chuckled. âIn fact, Iâll have the police looking for them too, and if they find them theyâll hold them long enough that they wonât do any harm. Still, Iâd prefer it if we found them first, just to be on the safe side. Iâm going to mobilize the whirly-bird.â As he replaced the receiver, he muttered, âTwo kids! Thatâs all that stands between us and certain success.â
