Chapter Fourteen

A big, airy room with picture windows overlooked manicured lawns and a kidney-shaped swimming pool. A big desk dominated the room, well-stocked bookshelves lined the walls and deep leather chairs and a sofa invited visitors to take it easy in expensive comfort. In one of these chairs a man in a dressing gown sat, a cup of coffee at his elbow. He was a slim man of middle age with a high forehead and a neatly trimmed beard. When he spoke he did so with a cultured English accent. He appeared totally relaxed.

But when the telephone rang he snatched it from its cradle.

“Yes?”

“We’ve lost them,” said a voice on the other end.

“Lost them!” He sat up abruptly. The heavy brows lowered. “How did that happen? Where are you?”

“At the Halsary Inn. We saw them board the bus, as we told you, and followed it. It was flagged down here but no one got off, and they weren’t on board. We made sure of that.”

“But they were to start? You’re sure of that? So what are you saying? Where are they?”

“There’s only one explanation. They must have seen us following. We were held up by a tractor and lost sight of the bus for a few minutes. When we got past the tractor we caught up with the bus sooner than we expected to. They must have got off in those few minutes.”

The man in the robe swore softly. “They’re kids, for God’s sake. Children. And you’re letting them…Never mind. How far back was that?”

“Oh, several miles.”

“So they’re a long way from the MacKay house—my guess is they’ll head for that. And they’ll be held up by the little girl. They can’t have gone far. Get back there and find them.”

“Yes sir. And sir? It’s unlikely, but in the meantime they might find a telephone and call the police.”

“Never mind the police.” He relaxed again and chuckled. “In fact, I’ll have the police looking for them too, and if they find them they’ll hold them long enough that they won’t do any harm. Still, I’d prefer it if we found them first, just to be on the safe side. I’m going to mobilize the whirly-bird.” As he replaced the receiver, he muttered, “Two kids! That’s all that stands between us and certain success.”
