Comparing English Translations

* * *

Students of the Bible often express a desire to use whatever translation of the New Testament is the “most literal.” While our translations approach the text through different philosophies, none set out with the goal of misrepresenting the Greek text. Now that we have toured through the various parts of speech and introduced ourselves to some of the complexities of the Greek language, it is no wonder that we find variations between our translations. A number of factors are involved in the process of translation, which we will explore below. After examining how the text of the New Testament is determined from the existing, or extant, manuscripts, we will then discuss the process of translation, the considerations made by translators, the limitations of translations, and some suggestions for how to compare translations in studying a biblical passage.
