The channels are made by removing the strips of bark after cutting along the lines marked around the scions. These strips should come away easily from the wood, indicating good cambial cell activity. If it resists, postpone bridging until it peels easily. If it still does not peel, the channel should be made in another place where the bark is in better condition.

Place the lower end of the scion in position and nail to the wood with small brads. Then spring the upper end into position and nail again. Place scions about three to four inches apart. Cover all wounded surfaces and areas with grafting wax or asphalt-water emulsion dressing.
