I regularly ask students to use rubrics to peer- and self-assess projects or major components of projects. When students use rubrics to self-assess their own performances, the chances that they will truly process and understand the criteria listed on the rubric increase. I believe it is important for students to view their own work through the lens of the performance-level descriptions on rubrics. Rubrics are fantastic formative assessment tools, as they provide students with the opportunity to identify areas needing improvement before the final grading stage. It can be very valuable for students to pair up and assess each other's projects using rubrics.

Interactive Unit Plans: Unit plans can be formatted to include room for students to actually demonstrate their understanding of the material as well as for peer assessment. In these cases, consider using different-colored ink to differentiate among student, peer, and teacher remarks. I learned from my friend and colleague Chris Bradley that including a place for students to add their initials on these types of unit plans subtly increases student responsibility, accountability, and ownership. An example of one of Chris's plans can be seen in Figure 3.2.
