Man’s Law Vs God’s Law

While we were engaged, my now wife went to visit her friends in central Virginia. God had been moving greatly at the church that we had been attending. Although she was out of town, she didn’t want to miss what God would do in Sunday service. She decided to wake up early and complete the three-hour drive from out of town back to Virginia Beach. Her excitement to arrive at the place of worship must have led to her driving 80 mph. Unfortunately, the police officer who pulled her over was not as excited about her speeding to go to church. He gave her a traffic citation for reckless driving for being 15 mph over the speed limit. She arrived at church on time but what was once excitement was now soured by the violation that would go on her record and the accompanying hefty fine.

Two weeks later, official paperwork arrived from the court within the county that my wife had violated the speeding law. This county was known to be tough on traffic violations. The fine was $1200 to be on or before the scheduled court date and then an additional $500 fine per year for the next three years. We felt that the amounts were exorbitant. Also, it was unusual to have to pay a traffic fine for subsequent years after the violation. My wife didn’t have a source of regular income as she was enrolled in college pursuing her master’s degree. Additionally, I was having my own monetary problems and sadly unable to offer any financial assistance. In slang terms, we were broke as a bag of glass! Our wedding was the next year and we had struggled to save up money to pay for it. These extra expenses presented a great burden for us. We were also faced with the possibility that if the fine was not paid my fiancée (now wife) could face jail time.

We met at my home and prayed the prayer of agreement. Jesus said in Matthew 18:19 KJV, “Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them by my father which is in heaven.” In prayer, we turned the issue over to God and asked that either He supply the money to pay the fine or help us resolve it by some other means. As the court date approached, the hefty fine loomed over my wife’s head. We reminded God that He was our source and that the reason she was speeding was to attend Sunday morning worship service. We prayed, gave thanks, and left the ball in God’s court.

A few weeks later, another envelope arrived from the court’s office. My wife hesitantly opened it and began to read it. It was good news! Very good news! The county sent out letters to several people dismissing their fines and court dates. The Supreme Court of Virginia instituted a uniform fine schedule for traffic infractions that overruled local county ordinances.
