Coconut oil has an unusually high amount of saturated fat and minimal amounts of monounsaturated fat. It contains about 92 percent saturated fat, 6 percent monounsaturated fat, and 2 percent polyunsaturated fat. Recall that saturated fats contribute to increasing bad cholesterol (LDLs) in the body. Compare coconut oil with olive oil, which contains only 14 percent saturated fat and 74 percent monounsaturated fat with 11 percent polyunsaturated fat. Olive oil is much better for heart health because of its high amount of monounsaturated fat, which is linked to good HDL cholesterol. While coconut oil’s saturated fats are medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are linked to improving weight loss, these studies are only found in animal models. Human studies do not support the benefit of MCTs over other saturated fat in risks for heart disease and obesity.19 Long-term studies on humans do not exist to support the claim that coconut oil is any different in its effects as compared with any other saturated fat product.
Research on Pacific Island and Asian populations, with diets naturally high in coconut oil, indicates low rates of cardiovascular disease and cancers. However, these populations have a more active lifestyle, eat primarily vegetarian foods, and have little access to fatty meats. Making a comparison to island people’s diets is unrealistic because there is little control of the variables between the groups. Is there a movement afoot to portray coconuts as healthy? Is the media doing so for the coconut industry or to bolster foreign trade with tropical regions? The evidence is strong that the saturated fat in coconuts is bad for our health.
