Many of the insects described in this book feed on pollen and nectar. Because the hybridized bedding plants found in nurseries are bred to be beautiful to humans, they have lost some of the characteristics that make them attractive to insects. Flowering herbs and wildflowers are a better source of nectar and will attract a wide variety of insects. Here are some suggested plants that produce lots of nectar and pollen to attract good bugs:

Alfalfa

Angelica

Baby-Blue-Eyes

Baby’s Breath

Buckwheat

Caraway

Carrot

Clover (sweet, white, yellow, and crimson)

Coriander (Cilantro)

Cosmos (White Sensation)

Dill

Feverfew

Goldenrod

Lavender

Lemon Balm

Lovage

Marigold (Lemon Gem)

Mustard

Nasturtiums

Parsley

Queen Anne’s Lace

Rose-scented Geraniums

Spearmint

Sunflowers

Sweet Alyssum

Sweet Fennel

Tansy

Thyme

White Sage…

…and any wildflowers native to your region
