Thanks to the open bar, the party was in high gear as the evening wore on at the wedding reception. After our supply closet escapades, Xander had been in a fantastic mood. Not even the bullshit drama with Josh and Elias could bring him down. I was so proud.

He was currently cooing over pictures of Ambrose and Augie’s kitten, Everest. They had rescued him while on vacation at a cabin last weekend for an early celebration of their one-year anniversary. Both of them were groomsmen in the wedding and looked dashing in their tuxedos. Rhys and Lucien eloping last year inspired them to evolve their friendship into a romantic one. It was yet another case where two longtime friends had gotten together and found happiness. I was surrounded by evidence that dating your best friend was a wonderful idea, but I wasn’t sure if Xander would agree.

While I hadn’t spent much time with Callum’s brother and boyfriend, they were fun to hang out with whenever we had the chance. The way the two of them bantered with each other reminded me of Xander and myself. Rune and Augie had bonded over their shared love of cooking, which was great. It thrilled me my once loner brother had gained a social circle of genuine friends.

I enjoyed seeing Xander’s soft side as he continued fussing over cat pictures. “He’s so tiny!”

Ambrose flicked to the next image, setting off another round of awww reactions. “He won’t stay wee for long.”

The picture of a powder puff white kitten would have melted even the most frozen of hearts. It made me want a cat myself, as did the fact that Xander had always loved them. We had talked about getting one while we lived together after college, but we had never gone through with it. Maybe we could adopt one or two of them now, though. Wait, aren’t you getting a little ahead of yourself?

“I’m so scared he’ll get squished underfoot by Brody.” Augie sighed when Ambrose laughed. “It’s not funny! He’s itty-bitty and you’re a giant.”

“If I haven’t crushed you yet, Everest will be fine. He’s a smart lad.” It was a fair point, since Ambrose’s tall, broad, and muscular build dwarfed Augie’s slighter frame. Even I appeared on the smaller side next to him. “Besides, he’s your shadow. If anyone will step on him, it’d be you.”

“Trust me, I’m already paranoid enough about that as it is. I don’t need you reminding me of that fact, thanks.”

Ambrose leaned over and kissed Augie on the top of his head. “I keep telling you not to worry so much. You’re a great cat dad.” It was cute how it made him blush.

“I’m so sad you got Everest after I moved out.” Callum pouted, before turning his pleading blue eyes on my poor brother, who didn’t stand a chance of resisting. “Maybe we could get one sometime? If we adopted a girl kitten, we could call her Olympe after Olympe de Gouges. Wouldn’t that be grand?”

Rune answered him with a passionate kiss that made Ambrose and Augie chuckle.
