Reaganâs heart sped up at the physical contact. She fought to focus on Joshâs words and not on the feel of his callouses against her skin. Thankfully, he kept his prayer short and released her hand, pulling away quickly and reaching for a slice of pizza.
âEat some salad with that,â Ellie told him as she scooped greens onto her own plate from a large wooden bowl. She passed it to Reagan, who took a discrete portion before handing it to Josh.
âReagan made it,â Lydia said with a knowing glance that made Reagan want to kick her under the table, if only the pedestal that held the whole thing up wasnât in the way.
âWell, in that case.â Josh winked at her as he took the bowl and helped himself.
She felt herself blush, and looked at her plate, picking up a fork. âLydia gives me too much credit. All I did was chop vegetables.â
âThatâs not true,â said Lydia. âShe also whipped up the vinaigrette.â
It was a honey-ginger concoction with a mild Asian flair that had been her motherâs recipe. It had turned out well, Regan had to admit as she stuffed a bite of salad into her mouth.
Josh also took a bite. His eyes widened, and he nodded approvingly. âYeah, thatâs good,â he said around the mouthful of food.
âDonât talk with your mouth full,â Ellie admonished.
Josh obediently chewed his food and smiled as he took another bite. Ellie nodded to Reagan. âIt is good. Youâll have to give me the recipe.â
âSure. Itâs pretty simple. Itâs better with fresh ginger, though.â
âI appreciated your help in the kitchen, too. That was a lot of chopping you did. Saved me a lot of work.â
âIt was my pleasure.â Reagan meant it. She enjoyed cooking and preparing meals, but there was only so much of it she could do in her tiny RV kitchen, and it hardly seemed worth the trouble of making elaborate meals for herself. But more than that, sheâd enjoyed spending time with the two women, listening to their mother-daughter banter. Theyâd been careful to loop her in to the conversation so she didnât feel left out. It brought a deep longing for her own mother to the surface, but she felt grateful for the small reminder of how it felt to be part of a family.
Maybe someday she would find that again. For keeps.
Nails tapping against the wooden floor pulled her attention toward Zeke as he padded into the kitchen. She smiled as he sat down beside Josh and looked at him with pleading eyes. She might not have her own family, but maybe she could get another dog. Maybe when she stopped wandering, she could get a whole houseful of dogs, surround herself with fur babies to care for. They would be her family, and maybe that would be all the love sheâd need.
She had a feeling sheâd be leaving Lydiaâs adoption event with more than just an article to write.
Zeke let out a pitiful whine. Josh reached over and patted him on the head.
