It was the weekend, so there would be no small children arriving at the house to play, but Selena would have taken Clover with her to the attic room even if it hadn’t been so.

‘All right?’ she asked, looking down at Clover, who was pale in the wan light from the late rising sun.

But Clover nodded. She was holding Selena’s hand and it made her feel better. Last night, she’d even slept in Selena’s bed, curled against her, and it had kept the dreams away, made Josh’s mother quieter.

This morning, there were still the dark circles around her eyes that had made an appearance sometime during the week, but she felt hopeful, now that Selena was there.

‘We goin' to make it better?’ she asked.

‘We are going to try,’ Selena said, and thought of Morghan. This probably was more Morghan’s thing, for it wasn’t something that Selena had ever done.

In some ways, her upbringing at Wilde Grove had been very sheltered. And when, of course, Annwyn had died, she’d sung her over as was right, but she’d never gone looking for someone stuck between the worlds.

Although, she thought now, setting Clover down on one of the big floor cushions, hadn’t Clover’s own mother been stuck between the worlds – hadn’t Beatrix called out to her?

And hadn’t she answered the call?

Selena remembered the conversation beside the wide, dark-flowing river.

Yes. She had gone there, and although this was different, it was also similar. Selena looked over at Clover and smiled reassuringly at her.

‘We’re going to be okay,’ she said.

Clover nodded. She trusted Selena implicitly. But she wasn’t looking forward to going and finding Josh’s mother.

Josh’s mama, she thought, was hurt, and there was blood.

It was scary.

Selena kneeled on the rug in front of Clover and took her small hands in her own.

‘What we’re going to do, Clover,’ she said, her voice low and kind, ‘is you’re going to show me where to go, and then we’ll bring you back here. Do you understand?’

‘I don’t hafta go too?’ Clover asked, relief making her shoulders sag.

Selena shook her head and stroked Clover’s curls. ‘No,’ she said. ‘This is a job for me.’

‘I too little,’ Clover said.

‘Exactly,’ Selena agreed. ‘You’re too little.’ She smiled. ‘You’re little and very precious to me.’

Clover nodded. ‘I love you too.’ She thought for a moment. ‘I just gotta show you where to go?’

‘Just that.’

That was okay, then. Clover thought she could do that as easily as breathing. She looked inside for a moment, and something caught her inward glance.

‘Rue,’ she said. ‘Rue got a new kin.’

Selena sat back and gazed at Clover in astonishment and delight. ‘A new kin?’

Clover nodded. ‘I fink it’s a sheep.’

‘A sheep?’

‘Yep. Real woolly.’ Clover curled her hands on either side of her head. ‘Has horns like this.’ She frowned at Selena. ‘Do sheeps have horns like that?’

‘Yes,’ Selena said. ‘Sometimes they do. Rams especially – boy sheep.’

‘Huh.’ Clover went to look again, to see what Rue was doing in the Far ‘n Wide, but Josh’s mum rushed at her instead and she shrank back with a cry.
