It’s easiest for existential leaders to provide clear goals, and in doing so, they cultivate a culture of creativity and innovation through their clarity. To quote a sports mantra, “Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose.”

Thus a former Tesla executive pointed out that CEO Musk has a hyper-focus on clarity. He distills the outward vision down to specific priorities, which is what attracts talent. But he insists that if you’re doing your job and hiring smart people, you need to be clear about the rules of the road. He defines the goalpost, and from there, people have to figure out their own tasks.

Frequent check-ins. Large or numerous meetings reduce productivity. But regular, quick gatherings and updates do work to keep the organization’s many activities on track, at the proper speed. How frequent the check-in will depend on the urgency or complexity of the project and the desired cadence.

Periodic meetings also help to establish a rhythm and stay on pace. These can feed into deadlines that prod teams to work faster than they would have otherwise. Some projects might have only one final deliverable, but regular updates keep leadership and other teams informed while ensuring a steady pace. While teams need a great deal of freedom, everyone should be kept in the loop and encouraged to move forward.
