Chapter 8

Emma

“Ourglobalteamofexpertscanhelpyoumanage….oh. Oh, shit.” Colin pops up from my lap, words jumbling out of his mouth in a fury. “Whoa, I was composing an email in my dreams.”

“Yes, so I gathered.” I nod.

He rubs his eyes as he awakens. “How long was I out?”

“About four minutes.”

He looks at me. “You’re kidding.”

I resist the urge to brush away the lock of hair that’s fallen in front of his forehead. “It was a short-lived nap.”

He lets his head fall back against the wall. “Think I’m dehydrated.”

“Wait!” I pick up my bag, rummaging inside. “I have a water bottle. Here, go on.”

I pass it over, and he accepts. “Thanks.” He swigs from the lip of the bottle and then hands it back. “Hey, what’s that?”

“What’s what?”

He tilts his head to my bag. “In your bag. That big heart-shaped box. Kind of unmissable.”

“That’s nothing!” I blurt out, smashing my bag against my chest to prevent his peering eyes. “It’s nothing at all.”

That’s a lie. He saw my annual box of Valentine’s chocolates. The ones I eat alone on the couch on February 14th. It’s kind of my secret Valentine’s Day tradition. And I’ve never told anyone about it. Not even my sisters.

“It’s definitely not nothing. It’s an enormous box of chocolates. Are you celebrating this cursed holiday? After everything we talked about?”

“No.” I shake my head. Then I throw up my hands. “Ugh, fine. So, sue me. I like chocolate.”

A glimmer passes over his eyes. “No, no. This isn’t about chocolate. You can get chocolate anywhere. You went out of your way to buy the heart-shaped box. This is something else.”

I roll my eyes. “Okay, fine. If you must know, yes, I buy myself the heart-shaped box. On purpose.” I lower my gaze, fidgeting with my skirt. “It’s nice to have traditions, even if they are just by myself.”

A little smile plays on his lips. “Will you share them with me?”

“Now?”

He laughs. “Ummm…you have other plans to get to in this elevator?”

I can’t smother the little chuckle from my throat. I didn’t realize he was so easy going and, fine I’ll admit it, kind of funny. I guess I really didn’t know as much about him as I thought.

And the fact that he just got on his knees in front of me…A wave of pure adrenaline rushes over me at the thought. I shake my head to clear it. “Okay,” I say, pulling out the box and resting it on my lap. I use my nails to slice through the plastic cover. “Let’s eat some chocolates together. Some Valentine’s Day chocolates.”

Next to me, I can still catch glimpses of his bare chest since he’s barely bothered to button up his shirt. My tongue slips out to lick my bottom lip, but I end up biting it instead. I’ll never get to see that naked chest again. I flip off the lid to the box. “But this is our secret.”

He smiles. “I won’t tell if you won’t.”

“What happens in the elevator, stays in the elevator. Right?”

I take out a chocolate and hand it to him and then take one for myself.
