Psalm 91 was understood to describe protection from demons in ancient times, from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Aramaic magic bowls to the Talmud and the New Testament. Given the lines about Dever and Qetev, other verses of the psalm were seen as referring to God’s protection from demons too.7 In Luke, the seventy disciples tell Jesus that the demons submit to them, and in response, Jesus alludes to a line from Psalm 91 (Luke 10:17–19; Psalm 91:13).8 In other words, Jesus gets that there are demons in that psalm.

Happily, Psalm 91 promises that God will be on the pro-human, anti-demon side of things. It won’t always be that way.

Figure 11. Kabbalistic personal amulet for protection from all kinds of demons and spirits, written for a woman named Farna bat Zafira (whose name is used in the text). The amulet includes all of Psalm 91—that’s the tiniest writing in the thinnest inner rectangle—along with other key verses such as Exodus 23:20 and Zechariah 3:2, which arise elsewhere in this book (19th century, possibly Italy).
