Rhiannon

Rhiannon is a Welsh Celtic goddess of the moon who rides on a beautiful white mare. Flocks of birds surround her, welcoming in the seasons. She has several associations, including links with the sun and the otherworld. She was probably a goddess of fertility, Rigantona, from an earlier period.

Rhiannon is pursued by Prince Pwyll on horseback, and however fast he rides he cannot catch up with her! Yet she does not seem to be going fast at all, reminding us of the moon, which we can never capture. However Rhiannon does marry Pwyll and they have a son, born on May Day. During the night the baby is kidnapped, and Rhiannon’s attendants are scared they will be blamed. They kill a puppy and smear Rhiannon with blood to make it seem as if she has killed her own child. As a punishment she has to greet any person coming to the palace, tell them of her wicked deed and then carry them on her back into the great hall. Symbolically she is made to be a horse, carrying a burden. This punishment continues for some years.

Rhiannon’s baby had been stolen by a demon, who then went to steal a horse. The farmer pursued the demon, who dropped the baby. Since he and his wife were childless they decided to keep the baby as if it were their own. However, they heard the story of Rhiannon losing her baby and brought the child back to the palace. Rhiannon rejoiced in tears when her child was restored to her, showing that she had not committed such a terrible deed after all.
