Mark didnât go to Stanford, Harvard, or Yale. He stayed with Lonnie in Denver for his graduate studies and doctoral program. He easily aced his classes and more easily stole her heart. She was happier than sheâd ever been in her life. They were madly and deeply in love.
The day after she graduated, he took her on one of their favorite hikes. When they reached the lookout, he gave her hand a gentle squeeze and asked her to wait a minute. Sunlight bathed the snow-capped mountains behind them, the pines sang softly, and Mark got down on one knee.
They married the summer after she graduated. For their honeymoon they rented a houseboat and sailed down the Colorado River. It was an ancient boat that spewed black exhaust smoke as it chugged along.
As he steered the beast down the river, she stretched out on the deck and watched him. She couldnât help but smile. Man, he looked goodâthe wind blowing his blond hair, his tanned skin, the scowl on his face as he grumbled, âGutless piece ofâ¦â
âHowâs it going there, Captain?â She sipped her diet cola.
He turned those amazing eyes on her and stole her breath away. âYou deserve a yacht for our honeymoon. Not this cheap piece of junk.â
She fake-pouted. âHow can you say that about our love-boat?â
âYou like this old tub? Angel, when Iâm a surgeon, weâll have plenty of money for a real sailing adventure. What do you think? Bahamas? Virgin Islands? Hawaii?â
âWhy canât we do them all?â
He grinned. âI like the way you think. Weâll make love all day and jump in the water to cool off. Eat a little. Rest a little. Do it all over again.â The look he gave her was so full of heat she thought she might have to jump in the water right now.
âHowâd you know?â She got up, pressed herself into his back, and wrapped her arms around his warm shoulders and whispered on his ear, âI have a thing for captains.â
He reached around and pulled her into his arms. âAll captains?â
âMmm-mm.â
âGuess Iâm going to have to work to make you forget the others.â He kissed the daylights out of her and she forgot every man sheâd ever known.
Neither one of them noticed when the stupid houseboat ran aground on a sandbar.
