Depending upon whom one believes, or reads, Hillaryâs reaction to all this was either business as usualâsince an unfaithful Bill was hardly a shock to herâanger at the political damage to her partner in power, or deep dismay over this betrayal of her sacred marital vows. Here, again, it is difficult to know what she truly felt in her heart, as the answer was known only to God and Hillary Clinton. Her friends told the press, âTo say that Hillary is disappointed would be a gross understatement.â10
But no matter how much the Clintons and their cronies tried to blame the crisis on Ken Starr for confirming it, or the likes of Matt Drudge for first reporting it, in truth Bill only had himself to blame. As Jonathan Alter wrote in Newsweek: âBy committing sex acts with a 22-year-old subordinate in the White House, Bill Clinton made his marriage the nationâs concern. In doing so, he victimized his wife all over againâ¦. Hillary was only now bearing the full burdens of her bargain.â11 Yet, as Alter and others noted, her âdisappointmentâ seemed as much political as personal. Wrote Alter: âShe is said to believe that her husband betrayed not just her and Chelsea, but much of what they have worked together to build.â12 Indeed, the strange press release from the first ladyâs office referred to her husband in a political as well as a personal way, saying that she âis committed to her marriageâ and âbelieves in this president and loves him very much.â13
Nonetheless, said her friends, she turned âinward, to her spiritual side.â14 Her press secretary, Marsha Berry, stated, âClearly, this is not the best day in Mrs. Clintonâs lifeâ¦. This is a time that she relies on her strong religious faith.â15 (In a June 2007 discussion of her faith, Hillary elaborated on Berryâs statement, announcing unequivocally, âIâm not sure I would have gotten through it without my faith.â)
There were in fact spiritual sources that Hillary tapped at this time, taking guidance from certain ministers. One such minister was civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, who invited himself to offer counseling even before Mrs. Clinton could pick up the telephone.16 Jackson dashed to the White House to offer his servicesâand then dashed to the cameras to tell the media all about it, generously giving an exclusive on his role to Newsweek in an August 31, 1998, article.17
Jacksonâs offer of himself was not inappropriate, as he had often called Chelsea at college to pray with her, and had apparently started doing so back in January during the night of the Super Bowl.18 During her talks with Jackson, Hillary mentioned that she felt Chelsea needed Jacksonâs counsel more than she did. At eighteen, Chelsea was not much younger than Monica; Chelsea was a college freshman, while Monica was the age of a college senior. So, on this August night, Jackson called Chelsea at the White House to ask if he could help. She fought back tears. âThings are really tough for my mom and dad right now.
