When Opposites Attack

The clash between liberals and conservatives is behind the culture war in the United States, and somewhat defines the political environment. They are two different worldviews. In general, Conservatives are pro-life, pro-gun ownership, against drugs, are more violent, more in favor of war, more capitalists and are more moralists. Liberals generally are pro-choice, in favor of control or prohibition of weapons, are more pacifist, tend to be environmentalists, are more in favor of equitable distribution of resources, approve homosexuality and are less moralistic.

In the United States conservatives tend to be Republicans and liberals tend to be Democrats.

Regarding sexuality, conservatives promote abstinence, and liberals promotes safe sex and contraceptives. At its extremes, conservatives are legalistic puritans sometimes represented derisively by an angry guy with a Bible in one hand, and a double-barreled shotgun in the other; and liberals as pacifists hippies represented by a guy with long hair promoting free sex while smoking weed. The differences are irreconcilable.

Cluster analysis of the National Health and Social Life Survey found that about 15% of the US population are traditional conservatives and 17% are libertarians. The rest belongs to groups in middle parts of the continuum. [25]

It is notable that among single people 3 out of 10 conservatives are sexually active. In contrast, 9 out of 10 liberals are. Liberals are more accepting of premarital sex and of casual sex. In addition, 1 of 10 single conservatives has two or more sexual partners in a year, compared to 5 out of 10 liberals. Liberals have many more sexual partners and are more likely to have a secondary sex partner.

This are two opposite sides of "the force". There can be no possible relationship between persons who are on opposite sides of the force. They are at war.

Romantic love is the same. Love cannot thrive on opposite sides of the force. There are two types of people in general, sexually permissive and sexually restricted, with significant segments of the population on either side.

We saw that a relationship between two alcoholics is harmonious, and a relationship between an alcoholic and a sober partner, is not. This also applies to libertarian and conservative partners. A libertarian person with permissive sexual attitudes ends up despising, disdaining and belittling a person with traditional conservative sexual attitudes. These relationships are not stable unless the permissive becomes conservative, or the conservative becomes permissive.

As in alcoholism, there will be no harmony unless both are the same. If they are different, either then the alcoholic becomes sober, or the sober becomes alcoholic. They both go to the dark side, or both go to the bright side. In this sense, opposites attack.

We can fall in love with a person on the opposite side, but if there is not a change of side, then it is likely that the liberal partner rejects the conservative one.

Then there is also the association effect. If you are on the bright side of the force you can end up sexually permissive, or end up abandoned (perhaps both).
