Chapter Sixteen

Candy looked very worried, her blue eyes sparkling in the light of the moon streaming through the kitchen window. Her eyes were fixed on the keys in Elliot’s outstretched hand, but it was several moments before she parted her lips in answer to his question.

“It’s my—”

Suddenly the click of a deadbolt and the creaking of a door opening had all three of them whipping their heads around before Candy could say another word. Someone had stepped through the back door of the kitchen, their silhouette framed in the doorway.

Elliot held his breath; they’d no time to hide. Then, before he knew it, the whole room was cast in a blinding, luminescent light. Candy and Eliza screamed at the sight of a figure in black, and Candy grabbed for a frying pan hanging on the wall beside her just as the figure removed its black ski-mask, revealing the face of her father, Calvin Knicklebean.

“Dad?” cried Candy in alarm, sounding both relieved and terribly worried at the same time.

Calvin ran his fingers through his matted hair, looking as though he were contemplating his reaction to their presence in the kitchen.

“Candy! Elliot — Eliza,” he muttered finally. “Candy, my love … you, uh, know I don’t approve of you bringing friends into the shop after hours,” he scolded her quietly, though the coldness of his eyes had softened at the sight of her. He stroked her cheek, then removed the black leather gloves from his hands. “You haven’t been dishing out sweets, I hope? Your grandfather does enough of that already as it is.”

Elliot and Eliza kept quiet, unsure of what to do or say. They didn’t have to wonder for long, however, for just then, Calvin’s gaze fell upon the keys dangling from Elliot’s hand.

Elliot, having all but forgotten about the keys, quickly tried to palm them, but the damage had already been done, and his hand began to shake as Calvin’s expression hardened, his eyes boring into Elliot’s.

“Candy!” he snapped suddenly. “Go upstairs.”

Candy hesitated at first, looking back and forth between her father and Elliot, but Calvin’s face was pained, pleading. “Go!” he roared, and the girl sprinted out of the room with a whimper.

Calvin locked the door to the upstairs behind his daughter and drew the chain across, ensuring their privacy. He turned back around to face Elliot. “That’s my property,” he said flatly, eyeing the keys in Elliot’s hand. “I’ll ask you to put those back where you found them.”

“Elliot, let’s get out of here!” Eliza croaked, stepping backward toward the door.

“No,” said Elliot sharply, not taking his eyes off Calvin. “It was you that attacked those people, and you who killed Dr. Gabby, wasn’t it?” he said as bravely as he could.

Calvin scoffed, his expression hardening again as he proceeded to remove his jacket.

“And it was you who poisoned Frederick Garvey and Delilah Humphrey with a box of chocolates all those years ago. You’re the traitor, not my dad!”

“Elliot, no!” cried Eliza, her eyes brimming with tears.

Calvin smirked, ever so slowly moving closer and closer to Elliot.
