Chapter Nine

I spent countless hours each day until my eyes crossed trying to figure out how to make things work out to my advantage. I took cat naps in different rooms of the house so my routine could not be plotted by my brother. At night, I lay awake listening for him in case he decided to pay me a visit while I slept. But more importantly, I listened for Reagan’s signal with mixed emotions. I wanted to be with her, talk to her, but I was also afraid of the risks she would have to take to be with me.

The day that set the proverbial wheels in motion came much sooner than I anticipated. Father joined me on the porch swing one afternoon, with news that filled me with nervous anticipation.

“The house is almost ready to be moved into. I’ve hired some men to help with the packing. Mr. Whitehall is going to ride out there with me today. He’s agreed to do the cabinetry.”

“Good, we can begin our new life,” I said, genuinely happy. It was a true play on words. The globes would show up soon now, and Reagan and I would be going home.

He draped his arm over my shoulders and hugged me close to him. “I’m proud of the way you’ve conducted yourself, Leanne, and if you continue to show compassion toward your brother, he’ll have to give in.”

Right, I thought as he ambled into the house. I spent a lot of time trying to get into Robert’s head. I figured that he planned to do away with me and pursue Reagan. He could merely tell her parents that he punished me for my sins and they would allow him back into their good graces. The bottom line, he wanted Reagan and I’d already thwarted his plans once. No doubt he planned to alter time in some way.

If that were the case, I would have to make some alterations of my own, and that meant getting to Mr. Whitehall before Robert did, if he hadn’t already.

“Oh, my God, Leah, have you lost your mind?” Reagan hissed, then looked around to see if anyone noticed.

“Call me Lee, it’s more befitting.”

“Whose clothes are these?” she said with a smile, pretending to be having a pleasant conversation with a friend.

“I don’t know. They were in a pile of my mother’s sewing.”

“You don’t really pass for a young man, you know.”

“I just need to speak with Mr. Whitehall. I’ll stay out of sight.”

“He’s in the shop, and lucky for us, I think he’s alone.”

“There’s no us, it’s too risky if we’re caught together.” I held my hand up forestalling the argument forming on her lips. “But I’ll need you to stand watch and let me know if anyone comes our way.”

“All right,” she conceded. “I’ll sit on the bench near the shop. If anyone comes that direction, I’ll cough or make some sort of noise.”

It seemed like a lifetime since I’d seen her in the light of day. The lurid bruise on her cheek stood out against her skin.
