Doubt, Descartes, and Evil Geniuses
Lost doesn’t offer specific answers, even metaphorically, that we can
then apply to the real world; what it points to, instead, is a link be-
tween the inner world we construct and the outer world we inhabit.
Lost is a thought that has only just begun, and there are many di-
rections it could grow along. Given the focus on character and the
importance of facing guilt and pain, it’s tempting to link Lost with the
first noble truth of the Buddha’s teaching (the Dharma): life is suf-
fering. Really, though, it’s too early to put forth anything that defi-
nite (besides which, the whole Dharma Initiative may turn out to be
nothing but a red herring). Lost shows us that you’ve got to make do
with what you’ve got (there’s no way off the island), and that the only
way to make the world better is to become a better person. All things
considered, I think that’s a wonderful place for a thought to begin.
