Measure twist angle with a protractor.

twist angle

Twist angle is a bit trickier to measure, but it can give you some really useful information. Measuring twist angle is easier than it sounds. You’ll need a protractor, a pen, and a sheet of paper. Start by drawing a line down the center of the paper, which will serve as your baseline. Line up the bottom of the protractor with the straight line and mark the center of the protractor and angles along the edge in 5° increments. Draw straight lines from the starting point to each 5° increment. Place your yarn along the straight line and look for the angle line that best matches the angle of twist in your yarn. It may be easier to see if you lay a needle along the twist. It’s easier to see the angle of twist in plied yarn or singles with color variations.

The twist angle tells you how tightly a yarn is spun. Yarn with a twist angle of 10° is much more softly spun than yarn with a twist angle of 35°. Yarns made from short fibers need more twist to hold together than yarns made from longer fibers, so a cotton yarn would probably have a higher twist angle than a silk yarn.
