THINGS THAT HELPED ME

1.I got specific about the details of my personal brand. If I only had sixty seconds to make sure you knew who I am and what I stand for, I feel confident I could communicate it in the ascent of a single elevator ride. I’ve done the work to know what it is I want people to take away from interacting with me. Because I’m clear on that, I can work on a regular basis to make sure my actions support and align with that vision. Consider too the whole person when getting into your specifics. Though Steve Jobs’s wisdom was an insight in this chapter, he’s ironically renowned for not only his prolific genius in business and marketing but also for his rough edges interpersonally. Finding balance in all aspects of your brand matters.

2.I made a list of the “operating principles” for delivering consistent brand deposits. If you were to describe how you hope to be in your life, could you list the ten things you would need to do consistently to have people describe you in that way? We hit this concept of operating principles at the end of the book, but basically it’s the idea that if you set guidelines and stay consistent to them, any person who drops in on your life would see you in the way you’d hope. I start with what I want my brand to be, then ask what it will take to act in a way that reinforces that.

3.I remind myself that you just never know. Once, while I was in the middle of pitching a new piece of business, I looked up and noticed a single face that looked so familiar. I couldn’t place him, and it wasn’t until we were almost done with the meeting that this person let me in on the mystery of where we’d met before. Across the table from me was someone I’d worked with years ago whom I’d fortunately befriended, even though he’d been a difficult cat to work with. I felt grateful for the serendipity of having treated him in a way that left the possibility of this deal open. If I’d have been any number of the other people who hadn’t treated him well, the deal would have been dead in the water. You never know who in your life will resurface tomorrow in a role that can advocate for or completely close down the thing you’re pitching. When you treat everyone like they might be a decision maker in a future boardroom, you leave yourself open to every opportunity that might present itself.
