Your liver, on average, can deal with one unit of alcohol an hour (half a glass of wine, a third of a pint of beer). Once you drink more than that your liver can’t cope with it. The alcohol then starts to get through the liver’s defences and out into the rest of your body.

When your liver is processing alcohol it makes a substance called acetaldehyde. This is actually a poison in its own right. It is acetaldehyde that causes your hangover – and also makes your breath stink like a brewery waste pipe. Lovely! The acetaldehyde is then broken down further to acetate, and this is then turned into water and carbon dioxide.
