My sister Bernadette had gone to London to pursue a career in nursing. Starting out at Charing Cross in the late ’60s, by 1975 she had become a peripatetic, private nurse. This meant she would visit mostly old people who were recovering from one ailment or another but able to convalesce at home. In the spring of that year she was assigned to an all-too-typical case. An elderly lady in South Kensington had fallen over and broken her hip, or should I say, an elderly lady’s hip had broken, and she had fallen over. In any case, Bernie cycled off to No.38, Princes Gate Mews and into the lives of the Burn family.
