“WHY DO YOU SOUND OUT of breath?” Sarah sat down at one of the tables in the hospital cafeteria and tucked her phone between her ear and her shoulder. “Lugging around bags of espresso beans?”

Brian laughed. “No, I’m walking home.”

She glanced at her watch—it was only two thirty in the afternoon. “Already?”

“That’s how it works when you open with the sun.”

“Well, isn’t that nice.”

He grunted. “You get up at four thirty in the morning and tell me how nice it is.”

“No, thank you.”

“That’s what I thought. So, what’s up?”

“Oh...” She fiddled with the Jell-O sundae she’d just purchased—a hospital staple she never passed up.

She’d planned to call Jess, but her bestie hadn’t been in the best of moods lately. Whether that was related to work, life, or Ryder, Sarah didn’t know, because Jess had clammed up again. She hid out in her room after dinner while Sarah and Brian cleaned up and watched TV. Last night, Brian had slept at Tasha’s since he was opening in the morning, and while Jess spent the night next to Sarah on the couch, she hadn’t said much, even when Sarah pried. So when Brian had texted her some silly meme, she’d dialed him instead of Jess.

“I’m just taking a moment before I have to drive back to the city and thought I’d say hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

“Do you want to grab dinner tonight?”

“I can’t. It’s Halo night with the guys.”

Right. Because now he has friends. A part of her hated it. She finally wanted him around—even if only as a friend—and he’d gone and gotten himself a life. The rest of her was torn between excitement that perhaps the distance would help dissipate whatever the hell was happening between them and hope that if he started to build a life here, Brian might just stay. If nothing else, Sarah could admit that she didn’t want him to leave Philadelphia.

“Can you do tomorrow night?” he asked.

She could, but her stomach was already doing flips of regret at her impetuous call. An invitation to “grab dinner” didn’t scream date, but she’d also never asked him to eat food out of the house with her before. And he’d followed up with an alternate option, which meant he was invested in going.

“I have Zumba on Wednesday nights.”

“Since when?”

“Since always.” Not that she had been to class lately. Even before the Tyler debacle, her attendance had been haphazard, but her class pass never expired.

“You know just wearing the yoga pants doesn’t constitute a workout, right?”

“Don’t be a jerk. It’s been a busy few weeks with moving and turning down a proposal and my needy fake boyfriend.”

“You wound me, Chestnut.”

That nickname. By his tone, she could already tell it was going to be a thing. “Stop it with that!”

He laughed. “I’m down for Zumba.”

“Seriously?”

“What? I like to shake my butt as much as the next guy.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy in this class.”

“That won’t bother me.” He paused, and she could hear him move the phone around and then the clinking of his keys.
